Frequently Asked Questions
Your questions about coaching, connections and plans
Getting Started
What is Roni?
Roni is an AI coach for your whole training week: strength, running and cycling. Your coach uses your completed training, recovery context, goals and the schedule you set to propose what comes next. You review the plan and ask for changes before approving it.
Do I need a Tonal?
No, but it's the deepest integration. Without one you can log lifts manually and Roni will program and track your week.
How do I get started?
Create your account, set your training days, session length and goals, then ask your coach to build a week. Connect Tonal during setup or skip it. You can also connect a tracker when available. Choose your own AI key on Free or managed AI with Pro. See how it works.
Do I need a Tonal membership?
Only for Tonal features. You need an active Tonal membership for Roni to read your Tonal training and send approved workouts to your machine. You can plan and log gym sessions in Roni without one.
Connections and Delivery
What does Tonal add?
Tonal is your deepest integration. Your coach reads completed workouts, sets, strength scores and Tonal muscle readiness. It suggests what to do next and sends approved workouts to your machine. Tonal is included with every plan.
What does Garmin add?
Garmin requires Roni Pro. Your coach can use activity, sleep and recovery summaries alongside your other training. You can also review and send strength, running and cycling workouts. Availability remains subject to provider approval and may vary by account.
What does Fitbit add?
Fitbit adds read-only activity, sleep, resting heart rate and HRV context through Google Health. Your coach uses that context when you ask for a plan or changes. Fitbit is included with every plan, subject to provider approval and account availability.
Can Roni send workouts to my Tonal?
Yes. Review and approve the workout before Roni sends it to your connected Tonal. Suggested weight targets are information for you to follow. Tonal does not accept a programmed weight target from Roni.
Can Roni send workouts to my Garmin watch?
Garmin requires Roni Pro. Roni sends approved strength, running, and cycling workouts to Garmin Connect, where they sync to your watch. Strength workouts can include written weight targets, not device-controlled load. A confirmed send means Garmin Connect accepted the workout; Roni does not verify watch sync. Availability remains subject to provider approval.
Safety & Privacy
Is it safe to connect my Tonal account?
Your Tonal password is used to obtain a token and is not stored. Tokens are encrypted with AES-256-GCM. Roni reads your training data through unofficial Tonal APIs, which may change or become unavailable. Review each workout before approving it. Read the privacy policy.
What does Roni read from Garmin, and is it read-only?
Garmin requires Roni Pro and remains subject to provider approval. With your permission, Roni reads activity summaries such as duration, distance and heart rate, and recovery summaries such as sleep, HRV, stress and Body Battery. The connection can also send approved workouts when you grant workout import permission. Roni does not store GPS tracks or per-second samples as coaching summaries. Read the privacy policy.
What does Roni read from Fitbit, and is it read-only?
Yes, Fitbit is read-only and included with every plan, subject to provider approval. Through Google Health, Roni reads Fitbit activity summaries, sleep duration and stages, resting heart rate and HRV. It does not send workouts or write health data to Fitbit. Connected summaries can be processed by the AI provider that generates your coaching. Read the privacy policy.
What data do you access?
Roni uses the training data you connect and the goals, preferences, injuries, messages and logs you provide. The selected AI provider processes the context needed for coaching. For Roni Pro, Polar handles payment while Roni stores limited billing identifiers and subscription status, never full card or payment-instrument details. Your data is not sold or used for advertising. Read the privacy policy.
Will it mess up my Tonal account?
You review workouts before Roni sends them to your Tonal. Your coach can also help remove a custom workout when you explicitly approve that action. Roni does not change your Tonal membership or payment details.
Can I disconnect at any time?
Yes. Use Settings to disconnect a training provider and stop new reads from that connection. Account deletion removes your Roni application data from active storage. Polar may retain transaction and billing records when required for payment processing, taxes, fraud prevention, disputes, or applicable law. Read the privacy policy.
What does my coach remember?
Your coach uses your saved preferences, injuries and relevant things you've told it. It does not remember everything. You can review and delete saved memory in Settings, and ask your coach to update or resolve an injury.
Training
How does the AI coaching work?
Your coach starts with your completed training, goals, reported injuries and the days and session length you set. Connected recovery data adds context. Ask for a weekly plan, review it, and ask for changes when your week changes. Roni does not rebuild or reschedule your week automatically. See the features.
How is this different from Tonal's built-in programs?
Your Roni plan starts with your completed training, preferences and limitations. Ask your coach to rebuild the week, change a day or swap an exercise. You can log RPE in chat and use that feedback in the next conversation about your plan.
Can I customize my workout split?
Yes. Choose push/pull/legs, upper/lower, full body or a body-part split. Set your training days and preferred session length. Tell your coach when those need to change.
Can the coach program dynamic weight modes (eccentric, chains, burnout)?
Yes. Ask for eccentric, chains, spotter, burnout or drop sets on Tonal exercises that support them. Review the changes before sending the workout. SmartFlex is handled by Tonal hardware and cannot be toggled through Roni.
Does it handle injuries?
Tell your coach about pain, injuries or movement restrictions. It can record them and use them to avoid aggravating movements when programming. This is a programming accommodation, not a diagnosis or a promise to prevent injury. Seek qualified care for pain or an injury.
How does Roni suggest progression?
Roni suggests when to add weight or reps based on completed Tonal sets. Weight targets are informational because Tonal does not accept a programmed weight. You can log RPE in chat, and the coach can call a deload when your RPE has been high. Automatic training-block progression is not available.
How do check-ins work?
Roni notices missed sessions, hard weeks, PRs and gaps, and leaves you a check-in in the app. Choose how often you hear from your coach, or turn check-ins off in Settings. A check-in does not automatically create next week's plan. Ask your coach to build it when you are ready.
Pricing
Is Roni free?
Yes. Free is hosted by Roni and includes up to 30 messages a day with your own AI key. Your provider may charge you for usage. No credit card is required for the Free plan.
Which AI keys can I use?
Use Gemini, Claude, OpenAI, or OpenRouter. Add your key and choose your provider in Settings. Your key is encrypted before storage. Your provider may charge you for usage. If you prefer no key setup, Pro includes managed AI.
What does Roni Pro include?
Roni Pro costs $15/month. It includes managed AI, up to 500 messages a month, and Garmin. Garmin requires Roni Pro and remains subject to provider approval. Cancel from Settings. Your saved personal AI key remains available as a fallback after Pro access ends.
Does Pro include more integrations?
Yes. Pro includes Garmin. Garmin requires Roni Pro and remains subject to provider approval. Tonal and read-only Fitbit are included with every plan; Fitbit also remains subject to provider approval.
Where is the Free plan hosted?
The free plan is hosted by Roni. Bring your own AI key. Your provider may charge you for usage.
Is Roni open source?
Roni was open source during its beta. The code is private now that there's a paid plan, mostly because the Tonal integration layer is the part we can't afford to have copied. Our data policy hasn't changed: credentials are never stored, tokens are encrypted with AES-256-GCM, and you can disconnect or delete your data at any time.
